Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
