New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
